The Big Chop!

My good friend Aja who has been transitioning for about 4 months decided that at the end of January she would do the big chop! This was no east feat for Aja since she has never had natural hair before, nor has her hair ever been shorter than a chin length styled bob. This time she had the courage, and the strength to brush aside naysayers and just go for it.  So here is her journey in pictures from start to finish:

Aja started with a long length of hair, that she had to maintain with blow-drying to achieve the affect of a relaxer.

But when water was added honey it was a different story! So, I sectioned the hair little by little with clips and cut off the relaxed ends:

She was really nervous, so we had to sip on a lil somethin' somethin' to go further:

Like most women she fretted about her most beautiful assets, " Are my eyes to large? What about my nose?" blah, blah, blah. I told her to just sip and relax. I knew she would be beautiful, regal even.

Amazing, I could see those 3b-4 curls shining through straight away. Her hair was already taking to its new form. In no time she emerged a beautiful, nubian, Queen:

So meet the new and all natural, Aja Prince!

A true Queen indeed, and we are excited for her new natural journey. May she see what we see, a beautiful women definitely On the Road to Queendom!

Tightness Does Not Equal Neatness

Happy Friday Queens! Let's get down to it.

Tightness does not equal neatness....no ma'am it does not. Tightness equals the pulling of the follicles, hair loss, thinning, and weakness.  I got the Molly Sad Face going on right now in the above picture because I am getting too many emails, being stopped by too many people asking me how often I re-twist my roots, etc.

Look, I understand you want and probably need that freshly twisted look but please remember that excessive pulling, or tightness can and will eventually lead to traction alopecia. I have seen this too many times. Do you really think that women with thick locs such as Nerissa Irving, or myself re-twist our roots every week or few weeks? We realize how heavy the locs are on the ends. What happens when you have heaviness on the end of something with a weak root? It snaps off. So, there is no way we can re-twist all of the time.

This doesn't exclude those who have skinny, sisterlocs, etc.  If you excessively pull, or tighten trust me you will deal with the consequences down the line.

So, please be smart and learn to love your hair the way it grows out of your head. The fuzziness, the puffiness of it all. We are born this way, it may look cute all neat and tightened, but you can look cute and neat without it laying all the way to your scalp.  Just ensure you have a healthy and clean scalp, take your multi vitamins, and drink plenty of water.

Give your scalp a break from over twisting. On a weekly basis massage the scalp with essential oils such as olive oil, jojoba oils, etc.

Love Ya!

Real Quick...

Hey Queens, real quick wanted to share with you that I shampooed my locs today after working out at the gym (ya'll remember that post?).  I used my handy dandy exfoliating gloves, I even washed the actual locs with them too instead of just the scalp. Whew! My scalp is renewed, and my locs are CLEAN!

I am fuzzy right now, but honey it was worth it trust me!

Loc Updates

Let's talk about the "dreaded" loc product question, "What products should I use?"

Cleansing the Scalp

Wanna clean scalp?

When you shampoo, do you get the feeling that you aren't cleansing your scalp enough? Well, I had this feeling recently and while shampooing, I looked over at my exfoliating gloves that were laying on my bathtub and then the light bulb hit me! I pulled them on and shampooed again paying strict attention to my scalp. I did not rub hard, really softly, making sure not to disturb the locs and wallah! I swear I thought my scalp sighed relief. I mean it felt so good, and my scalp was truly cleansed.

Now since these are exfoliating gloves, there needn't be any intense rubbing, scratching, digging, or vigorous washing, but it was a great departure from the norm. So, if you want a truly clean scalp, go to your nearest pharmacy, WalMart, Target, or beauty supply store and pick up a pair of inexpensive exfoliating gloves. They sale for as low as $2.95 a pair!

Let me know how it works out for you!

Uneveness & Brushing

Okay, so as of lately I noticed that some of my locs are longer than the other. I mean like really longer than the others. Some are actually past my butt! So I've been tempted to cut them, but I just went ahead and knotted them until the other catch up to their length.

I don't have a problem with cutting my locs, but I dunno if I should or shouldn't. I'll just keep them like this until I make a decision one way or another. Also, I have been brushing my locs at the root when I want to hurry and go in the mornings. I am not retwisting as much because I am scared to death of traction alopecia. Plus, I am so over having tightened to the root locs.

Ask Writing Addict

Dear Queen Writing Addict,

Hello!  First, I want to tell you that I am so happy to have found your site!  It is wonderfully put together & contains so much information - it's like my personal Loc Bible!  I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate the time and effort that you have put into your creation and I thank God that you are gracious enough to share it with us.  Please accept my humble thank you - from my heart to yours!  In addition, I thank you for bringing your original (Woo Chile) back into circulation - I was going through withdrawal on the days that is was not available.  That isn't to take anything away from your latest site (congrats, by the way) but the original is my fave.

I wanted to ask you about product buildup and what I can do to remove it from my 2-year old locs. I recently noticed that I have the dreaded product buildup interspersed in my locs and am quite distressed about it.  I have been using ACV rinses to remove it,yet it still remains.  I'm now wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm missing a step.  Typically, I put ACV in a spray bottle and spray my locs after washing and conditioning.  I place a plastic cap on my head & a towel around my neck to catch the runny concoction and generally leave it for at least an hour.  Afterwards, I rinse and re-twist.  Am I missing something?  Is there something else that I should/could do?  Any advise or suggestions that you can offer are greatly appreciated.

One more thing, I have stopped using all shea-based products in my hair as i believe that this is what originally contributed to the buildup.  Ok, thanks for your time and I'll await your response.  Be Blessed!

Signed,
Bonnie

----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Queen B,

Thank  you so much for your kind words, I was beginning to think my dear Queens had left me! Let me just say that keeping up w/two sites is too much work. So, I will be back to the basics for a while. I love helping you ladies out, seriously I do!

Now lets move on to the product buildup problem.

I just have to say that although products do give that polished look, it can, and will give you product buildup especially if you canno't properly rinse it out. So with that being said, the ACV rinses are absolutely essential. In fact, the way you are doing it may not be the best way to remove the buildup. You see, when we put products in our hands we tend to warm it up without realizing it with our fingers, hands, etc. Then we place it on the loc and palm roll or twist it onto the hair. Sure it coats the loc but when it fully cools it actually penetrates the loc and sits there. It gets trapped into the loc. This can happen w/shampoo, conditioner, etc.

So what is the answer? Most say, don't use products period. To religiously cover your locs when you are lounging about. Still you want that manicured look, and you need to tame the strays. I say use something light, Aloe Vera gel, I have even used clear gel for a period in my loc'd life.

But shea butter, beeswax, will surely get trapped into the locs. Beeswax is a definite no when you are past the baby loc (budding) stage. How do you get rid of it?

You do the ACV rinses every 2-3 weeks. But what I suggest, is that you rinse the locs with it. personally I use a large cup and with a plugged up sink, I rinse, massage, and later the locs with it. I continue this cycle for as long as my neck, can stand it. Then I get underneath my tub facet and rinse. You need some force behind that water. A good rinse. Also, it will take a couple of ACV rinses to get rid of this buildup but it will evenutally come out. You might want to look into latching. It will keep you product free and tight.

Let me know how this works out for you!

P.S., I am happy to be back with you all!

Mary...

The fabulous Sisterloc rocker and On the Road to Queendom member Mary is the owner and operator of Afro Kinks Beauty Boutique. Guess what? Mary and I have been down the hall from one another for about a year! I know small world huh? I was walking down the hall and saw the sistah rocking some uber cute sister locs and she looked so familiar. So she hesitated and so did I, she complimented me on my locs, and I told her she looked so familiar. To make a long story short we were both thrilled that we were literally down the  hall from one another, and we hugged like old friends!

Mary I see you girl! Ladies she is fierce, not to mention cute as a button. Mary stated she decided to go natural because of thinning. Seriously, you wouldn't be able to tell now. Since she has gone natural her hair is beyond healthy. So I just wanted to give a shout out to Queen Mary! Visit and shop with her at:

Oooh Mary does this mean I dont have to wait for shipping I can just run down the hall and get my products? Woop woop!

Help Haiti

I would say that as a people we have truly been though some things within the past year and now it is spilling over into this year. Will it ever stop? No, because this is what we call life: national disasters, death, lost loved ones, disease, financial instability, etc. However, God knows just how strong he has made us so you have to prove your strength by holding up even when you want to fall. He wants to see how you extend out your hand to your fellow man; so make sure you take that last $5 and send it to the Haiti charity. You will be judged according to your works remember this. The country of Haiti has suffered a massive earthquake leaving a massive amount dead, missing, and severely injured. They need our help.

So remember your blessings and bless those less fortunate. Simply click the above pic and it will take you to Wyclef Jeans Haiti website where you can donate as much or as little as you want. Can you sacrifice your Starbucks for one day?

So...

Hello Queens!

I know its been a while, but trust me when I tell you I have not slowed down in the New Year. In fact I am sprinting around this piece! The details are all in the locs I tell ya. My locs are in need of a serious hair treatment. I need to seriously touch up these gray roots, and get some styling done. This is when I desperately need to be on the far East or South to get my locs taken care of. Hmph, you ladies don't know how good you got it.

So, I am asking you to please be patient with me and the blog. I have to undo all that I did! The links are broken, but not gone. They will be back.

I am working diligently to bring this back online, and give you a premium and quality online magazine with ontheroadtoqueendom.com.

You have to bear with me!

Jan 5, 2010

Woo Chile!

This blogging and website stuff ain't no joke! So, after many requests I am keeping my blogger. It seems some of you Queens missed a sistah, awwww....I love ya'll too! LOL

So anyway, we are back on and poppin, but with our very own magazine. Yay! You Queens will have to visit and support. For the new year there will be a twist, the Loc'd Beauty of the Week will now be On the Road to Queendom's cover feature. We will also scale it back to Loc'd Beauty of the Month.

This will be a highly coveted spot, complete with a spread about that person, and giveaways to that Queen. She deserves something for being chosen right? So for the month of January, we are featuring Miss China. So February I will be looking for just the right pick.

This will be competition style, open to my readers! I will post info a little later!

Glad to be back!
