The Doll Test...Again

****UPDATED****

It all started back in 1954, but not much has changed. I'm talking about the doll test. The experiment is still going strong, and now CNN has put their hands around the experiment. I won't say I did not become disheartened after watching this video, but I can say that we as parents have got to step up and watch our behavior, what we say, how we act, and what influences our children are under each and every day. It starts in the home. Why not do a simple doll test with your own children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, Godchildren, whatever. Ask them these same questions, and tackle the tough subject of race. I will do it with my child tonight, and I will report to you what I have learned from my own 3 year old daughter.

---------------------------------------------
Well, I conducted the experiment with my child. I line 2 dolls up, one white, one light, and one dark. She picked out the dark baby for all things good, smart, pretty, and she said it resembles her. Needless to say I held my breath while she contemplated and replied. I must be doing something right and I will continue to do so.

Here is the video of the experiment conducted some years ago by a girl in school.

Summer Style....

Here is my hair french braided to the back into a bun. I very seldom do this because I am absolutely paranoid of traction alopecia. I also do this hairstyle so that I can wear my hair crinkled for about two weeks. Anyway, this style is uncomfortable because the bun is entirely too large, lol! Still I rocked it for two days.

I had to do a brief volunteer stint at Macy's at the Fashion Show Mall, and guess who I saw at the MAC counter beating faces? It's Lady Guy Guy! LOL I know chile but this man in his tall boots is about 7'0 and fierce!  His makeup was on point, and the quality of my lil phone cam will not allow you to see the spikes on his shoulder pads! Fa-bu-lous!

Profound Sorrow Indeed

Words cannot express how I felt when first hearing of this disgusting tragedy. Little 7-year old Aiyana Jones was shot and killed by the negligence of the Detroit Police on Sunday, May 17th, while she was sleeping. The police were looking for a murder suspect, but how the police gun "went-off" after throwing a flash grenade into the house is beyond me, and it isn't clear to anyone else either (insert side-eye here).

I won't say much because we know collectively as a people what this is. But why it keeps on happening is beyond me....

Oh yea, I am told people were telling the police that there were children in the house prior to them raiding it.

Rest in peace little Aiyana, I'm sorry this happened to you. Jah bless their family.

Loc'd Beauty of the Week

This beauty's name is Aja Black, but don't let the soft sweet face fool ya!

This Queen knows her power and therefore, has no problem rippin' the mic. In fact she is a singer, rapper, lyricist, and poet.

Reflection, positivity, humanism, faith, courage, confidence, and overcoming struggles are some of the elements she combines to make her music explosive enough to make your head nod and deep enough to make you think. We are loving this Queen's locs! The color, and the thickness sets it off just right.

I give you Aja Black as your Loc'd Beauty of the Week!

Go here to hear some of her music, please support!

Reader Email

Hey my loc'd divas....I promise you are just like a sweet lover you know just what to say and when to say it. Needless to say, I have been busy as a bee lately with the debut of my novel High Stakes. I haven't been able to do much posting on here. Its hard to keep this up with all the craziness in my life. Just when I start thinking about giving something up, such as this blog (lets face it, I don't get much feedback on here). So, look at the email I received this morning. Right on time....simply beautiful. Thank you Doreen...

Writing Addict!

I just wanted to write to tell you I've been following your blog for
probably a year now. For some reason or another, I've wanted to lock
my hair for the past year, but had something stopping me (I was in
China and there was no one to do it, now I'm unemployed and have no
money). However, I was still getting my hair done (I live in Ghana, so
it's really, really cheap) and figured out that getting my hair done 3
or 4 times was equivalent to paying a cheap salon to do it, so I did
it on Monday and I am soooo happy. I feel free. No more going through
the tedium of braiding, washing, unbraiding. UGHHH. And the pressure
I've been receiving to straighten it (even in AFRICA, people hate
natural hair)...I intend to have my hair like this forever and your
blog is a large part of why. So thank you so much for doing what you
do. You're an inspiration to people like me who want to reject white
supremacist beauty ideals and be true to ourselves.

Doreen
