FDA Receives Complaints about Brazilian Blowouts

Exactly what is a Brazilian blowout? I have been looking at this for a while now, and to tell you truth I feel as if I can never get a straight answer. The Brazilian blowout is what women go to to get so called, salon looking hair on the daily. It is very expensive and black women have been getting this treatment lately. However, here is what I dug up:

The term “Brazilian Blowout” is a trademarked brand name – in reality just a process of a way of doing hair. It’s often misconstrued and explained wrong as there are a number of “Brazilian” hair techniques on the market at the moment. So, you’ll want to make sure you are getting the right results for what you are searching for. Let’s visit for a moment, exactly as the company does, what the Brazilian Blowout is.

Their official website states:
“The BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment in the WORLD! Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. The end result is smooth, healthy, frizz-free hair with radiant shine! What makes us different? The ONLY Professional Smoothing Treatment that improves the health of the hair. No Damage! Entire treatment completed in just 90 minutes! No down time! The minute you leave the salon, you can wash and air dry your hair, and it will be smooth, frizz-free and radiant! Results last up to 12 weeks. Leaves hair smooth and frizz-free WITHOUT harsh chemicals. Acai aftercare products ensure longest lasting results.”

Please don’t confused the Brazilian Blowout technique with anything else. This is a keratin treatment and uses absolutely no chemicals. There are some other processes you can find online which have references to formaldehyde and other dangerous chemicals in them – this process does not! Since it is a fairly expensive treatment, you want to make sure you are getting what you are paying for. Make sure that your stylist is certified for the “Brazilian Blowout”. You can find a salon that has certified stylists on our site (through the “Find a Salon) link, or on the company’s official site. If your stylist is not certified, don’t get it from them! Or at least, ask them to get certified first!*Taken from brazilianstyles.com*
So umm its supposed to be harsh chemical free huh? So why is there a class action lawsuit happening? Why are hordes of women complaining of eye irritation, nose and throat burning. Why are women stating they are tearing uncontrollably during the application?

Apparently when the treatment first started in Brazil, they were using a very high percentage of formaldehyde. Now they are claiming they are formaldehyde free, but actually they just lowered the levels. On brazilianblowout.com it makes no mention of their product being formaldehyde-free. So in my opinion as well as others it is all just a big rumor.

In Canada they have issued a warning against using the Brazilian Blowout. After laboratory testing it revearled there is 12% formaldehyde--60 tmes teh limit allowed by law for cosmetics. There are only 200 coming forward to date, but they are predicting the number to jump to thousands.

Sounds like our sisters from another mother, are experiencing what we experienced in lye relaxers and perms. Have you ever gotten a Brazilian Blowout? If so what were your experiences?

Stay Blessed & Happy Locing!
