Ask Writing Addict

Hey Writing Addict!

Do you have any recommendations for conditioners for locs? I'm having a difficult time finding a chemical-free/residue-free conditioner for my hair (loc'd for 14 months). I'm very worried about winter (Toronto), although I wear hats & scarves, I've noticed my hair is drier than normal (I've increased my water intake).

I currently use Dr. Bronner's Peppermint shampoo, and Organic Root Stimulator's Nature's Shine (Coconut Oil).

Do you have any suggestions?
--Alexis

Hi Alexis!

I totally understand being nervous about the winters in Toronto, I've only been to Canada once and it was in the fall. I can only imagine how the winters are. With that being said, a great conditioner for locs is essential to handling harsh weather conditions. While I am an advocate of Leave-in Conditioners personally. I have tried some pretty good conditioners. However, you want to be careful when using conditioner because if its not rinsed out properly you will find it trapped in your locs, which is no bueno! Peep a few of my favorite
Laureth sulfate free conditioners:

Organix Conditioner...pick the conditioner which appeals to your senses. They come in 14 different organic and exotic varieties! I absolutely adore this line, and its available at WalMart! Go here if you cannot find it in your area.

Jamaican Mango & Lime Protein Conditioner...I used this a few times. I love the smell, and feel of this product. You can also find this at most retail markets or here.

Nappy and Happy Suede...hands down it has it going on! Put a little of this bestseller in your locs, and you will be sold! Available online here.

These are a few to try. Remember it all depends on your locs, not all conditioner or any product created equal. So you have to try a few before you find the perfect one for your hair. Good Luck pretty!

Stay Blessed & Happy Locing!

Ive used herbal teas from day 1. Chamomille(lightens and conditions) and hibiscus(red tint) are my favorite-but you can use rosemary, green tea, any plant based organic tea to condition locks....5yrs and counting, it's wonderful. I follow up with a mixture of castor oil/aloevera gel/essential oils to massage and lock the moisture in.
