Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa Queens! Love you all, have a great holiday!

Holiday Bun

Hey sweet cheeks'! I just wanted to share with you a cute hairstyle I thought up real quick. I call it my holiday bun. I just made one ponytail by gathering my two sides, and then wrapped the remaining hair around that ponytail in a criss cross motion (loosely though). It made for a cute do, then my friend pushed that bird feather in the middle of it :/ It came out cute though, what do you think?

Be A Queen (A Poem)

Be a Queen: Own Your Power and Glory

Be a Queen. Dare to be different. Be a pioneer. Be a leader. Be the kind of woman who in the face of adversity will continue to embrace life and walk fearlessly toward the challenge.

Take it on! Be a truth seeker, and rule your domain, whatever it is - your home, your office, your family - with a loving heart.

Be a Queen. Be tender. Continue to give birth to new ideas and rejoice in your womanhood.

We are daughters of God - here to teach the world how to love.

It doesn't matter what you've been through, where you come from, who your parents are, or your social or economic status.

None of that matters. What matters is how you choose to love, how you choose to express that love through your work, through your family, through what you have to give to the world.

Be a Queen. Own your power and your glory.

- Oprah Winfrey

Princess & the Frog Review

Hello Queens, you all know how much I anticipated the release of Disney's new release, The Princess and the Frog. Well this weekend, I had the pleasure of taking my dear three year old daughter and little 12 year old Goddaughter to go view it. From the moment it came on I was intrigued. It was filled with Disney charm, great animation, wonderful voices, beautiful singing, and on the edge of your seat suspense.

The movie flowed well, and it kept my attention from start to finish. You forget that she turns into an amphibian halfway throughout the movie, and you lose your "yea right" attitude. There really is a great underlying message, and this is the perfect movie to take the little princess in your life to go and see. The look on their faces is priceless when they see a character on the screen who resembles them.

My verdict? Go and see it. Especially if you loved the classic princess movies in your prime.

Hair Decorating For the Holidays

Hello Queens! I am thankful for you allowing me to be in your realm again! I have been thinking of each one of you – it’s true! As I sat reading my latest copy of both Essence and Ebony Magazines, I turned page after page of advertisements and articles of blacks about blacks; I noticed that all the women depicted in these magazines have mink straight permed, sewn or glued hair.

While that shinny sleekness is a decoration for the holidays, it sends a very strong message to young girls and natural hair. It is not enough to feature natural hair as a summer article – both of these magazines do not represent me nor address my natural state. The advertised hair care produces all have models with bone straight hair. I subscribed to these magazines in the hopes of supporting black enterprise; but when these entities cannot acknowledge me and my natural state on a continual, supportive basis…well it’s time to change some old habits for the New Year! There is not one magazine issue where I can read an article and walk away with some helpful information on natural care fit for a Queen! Thank goodness for On the Road to Queendom!

These advertisements are all ornamental. Natural hair is very versatile and I do love to adorn my locs with charms. I find unique pieces that can be an ear ring, toe ring, an ear cuff or an actual hair charm that is made from a gemstone, a shell or a coil. I have also even gone as far as to purchase gold wire from my jeweler and make my own hair jewelry. The gold wire does not tarnish nor does it break easily and is light weight. Many African vendors and natural hair salons also carry these fun accessories.

Hair charms are changeable and can reflect a time in your life, a mood or your favorite totem. Hair jewelry and charms makes your crown, your adornment so much more personal and unique!

One of my FAVORITE hair jewelry vendor’s is New Bein,’ http://www.newbein.com/

I have attached the web link for you to browse, get ideas and even make a wish list. New Bein’ has been a favorite supplier of mine for years: the photo catalog is true to the product that you order and the prices are reasonable in price. There is a large selection to choose from.

I will be in touch again very soon Queens! Until then…stay loced and grow natural, it’s within YOU!

PS – Hair Superstitions sent to me by Queen Janet:

If you throw your hair (from your brush or comb) in the trash then it won't grow back (apparently burning it or flushing it down the toilet was the best way to get rid of it).

If you pluck a grey hair, 3 more will grow back.

I'm not sure if this last one is a superstition or not...but I've also heard that black people can't get lice (which I know isn't true).

Thank you Queen Janet for your kindness! You can always reach me at: boldsuniversity@yahoo.com

The Magic Pill or Is It?

As if lace fronts, weaves, etc., wasn't enough some scientists in Brisbane, Australia say they have discovered the gene responsible for dictating the curliness of hair.

Researcher Professor Nick Martin said his team discovered variations in the trichohyalin gene, which was previously known to have a role in the development of hair follicles, are responsible for the curliness or straightness of hair, the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported Tuesday.

According to Martin:

Potentially we can now develop new treatments to make hair curlier or straighter, rather than treating the hair directly,” he said. “I will be discussing this with a major cosmetic company in Paris in January. [Read more here.]

My soul is curling up as we speak. They are actually wasting time, trying to figure out what makes curly, kinky, wavy, straight hair? They are going to waste money to get their so called solution put in a pill form? Oh My Gawd! So not only will the pill probably go on sale and costs God only knows how much, but they're going to be all sorts of concoctions and variations going on sale in the underground giving folks cancer and what not!

These variations are going to be undoubtedly sold in Hair Supply Stores on the corner right next to those damn lace front wigs! I digress, say it ain't so!

Once again, we are going to let society dictate to us what beautiful is, whats so-called wrong with us. So now we have pills to make our mahogany, cocoa, pecan colored skin turn white (i.e. Sammy Sosa, Lil Kim), but now were going to have some pills to straighten our hair?

I'm sorry ya'll can have it, I am gonna stick to my nappy roots. Good Luck with that!

Lace Front Hell

One of my fav sites, Balleralert.com wrote a post about lace front wigs. Not all lace front wigs are bad, especially if you have a medical need to wear one, or you have enough money to purchase premium quality lace front wigs like the rich and famous. But even they look quite dreadful from time to time (click here). But what is bad is those lace front wigs that Shaquanilla nem' is purchasing at the corner Korean beauty supply store. I go into a beauty supply store maybe ever 5 to 6 months for petty stuff like dax wave goop for my son, a new brush, or something. But I 'll be damned if I don't time my visit on the calendar. I hate to say it but I dare carry my ass up there around the 1st of the month. Look don't judge me, go on up there to the beauty supply store and see for yourself on the 1st. Its a mad house.

I almost get ran over by women and girls trying to get to the counter trying on this wig, or that wig. Just grabbing up whatever they can. That shit don't even fit! Seriously. Lace fronts are supposed to be fit to your head. How about the time I went home to visit, and a family member, (lawd I ain't gone say no names) had one on. It was dreadful! The glue visible, the stray hairs she wore loose to give the illusion of baby hair or something? When I asked her about the travesty she simply quoted, "I love the white girl look!" Honey I just smiled curtly and took a swig of my wine. Now lets move on....

I am NOT a natural hair nazi you know this! However, I can't get with these damn random ass lace front wigs hanging off these heifers heads looking like a dead cat. We need to speak up and let some of these sisters know (be careful because Shalanella nem' can get pretty rowdy when you try and tell them something about their appearance). The time, energy, and money they spend on these synthetic traps that usually only look good for 1 -2 wears they can invest into their own hair. I mean we as black women have to get to know our own hair and textures, so that we can be happy with what we have. Still I know some of you have family and friends that are walking around with these corner store dead cats on top of their heads, smh.

A New Twist! A New Bud!

Hello Queens and thank you for having me as part of your family! I have been locing my hair for ten years – and I have no intention of changing! I was not always loced…I have had years of being chemically enslaved, proudly bore burn marks on the rims of my ears and my cheeks; enduring the sulphur oxidizing stench of the “cream crack” that made me ‘bone straight’ for another eight weeks; where my hair could not tolerate water or excessive sweating.

All my life I had hair, I grew to have a head of hair that just grows and grows; for me it’s just genetics – complete with a widow’s peak. I can remember my childhood, sitting between somebody’s knees with a jar of bergamot or Dixie Peach; I can still remember the smell. I also remember the smell of Sulphur -8 and Glover’s Mange – for the serious hair grower! As a little girl, I was known as the ‘yellow child with all that hair!’ Barrettes could not contain me, rubber bands struggled to hold on, head cloths and hats just could not handle me, and a skully cap had to be a wide as a whale to cover my hair.

Every summer when I visited my grandparents in South Carolina, the village mothers would come to my grandparent’s house with their big bellies and new babies to rub one of my plaits on their belly or their babies head so they will have hair like mine.

Of course I rebelled throughout the years with experimentation on color, length, style and care. It was only when I listened to my body’s reaction to the chemicals of a perm that resulted in serious scalp burns that I decided to go natural. It was hard for me to go thru withdrawal, to embrace the kink, to move away from the stink smoothness of chemically treated hair – the oxidation that was offensive to my olfactory senses, that burn became a brutality I had gotten used to. I was nervous and anxious; I had forgotten what my natural hair felt like. I was threatened by my family for choosing to loc, I was ‘warned’ that I would never secure another professional job again with that ‘nappy’ hair.

I was associated with smoking weed, being a Jamaican and being unclean. No one remembered the biblical reference of hair locing and how priest’s loced their hair to bind a promise made to God. I had left the stink silkiness of the Koreans, the glue and the oxidation. No more all day pilgrimages at the local beauty shop complete with brown bag lunch, I was set free.

Through all of this my hair continued to grow and so did my awareness, so did my spirit. I learned to be different and to be comfortable in it; to be strong and to let the natural within me come forth. As my hair grew so did the love of myself. My natural hair growth is a cultivation that went thru childhood; potty training, adolescence and young adulthood, my hair went off to college and came back a master of the natural. As my hair grew so did my pride and awareness of where I came from. My natural hair is my adornment, my crown, a testament of my faith, a commitment to self care.

So far in ten years I have cut my locs five times, I am still growing strong at 45. Self love is tending my locs and is better than any vibrator! I now walk thru the rain and snow completely free and unafraid of nature around my hair, it is as natural as the earth and the weather; drinking up the rain and snow like the roots of a tree, protecting me from the hot sun and cold wind. Catching the whispers of my ancestors, I am free.

I will be writing about hair growth and taking the Queens back a bit – to the old ways. Please send me your hair superstitions to my email address boldsuniversity@yahoo.com. A hair superstition I grew up with: “Never let anyone who is angry or vexed with you do your hair.”

I look forward to growing in the company of Queens. It’s time for me to open my special place and share with all of you! Thank you!

Dreadlock Mohawk

Today I am rocking the loc' mohawk. This style was achieved by pulling the sides up into 4 high ponytails all going vertically down the middle of the head. You will need hairpins of course. In each ponytail you will make at least 5 different coiled ponytails. Take the coils and wrap around the ponytail paying attention to keeping it in the middle of the head and secure with pins. Continue to do so until all hair is coiled and secure! Then rock on sis!

Week 6 of Challenge

Week 6 of the Miss Nappturality Contest called for natural party chic. We had to style our hair as if we were going to a party. I had a great time during the shoot but froze like hell out there barely dressed. I do not envy real models! I am still hanging in there Queens. Sadly I do not receive enough votes, nor support. The only reason I am still in the running's is because of the judges. So, if you are voting thank you very much; and if you have $3.25 to spare please go to going-natural.com and register to vote. You can vote for me for the duration of the contest as many times as you'd like!

What do you think of this photo shoot?

My Queens

We have visited the subject of black love and dating here on On the Road to Queendom and I have made my position very clear. In case you are new and need to know it is the following:

While I am proud and love who I am I embrace all of God's creations. I simply believe in love, no matter the race, creed, or color. It just so happens I fell head over heels with and have married my equal, a beautiful black King.

My ideology came at a price while dating. I lived for quite some time in the South where there is still a lot of prejudice and segregation. I have dated outside of my race while living there and have received all kind of flack, black on black prejudice and some more. But I stand firm in my beliefs. I have had friends tell me that I was a sell out for dating outside of my race, and that I should wait for a good black man. I could not wrap my head around this. Why should I sacrifice a good date, going bowling, to the movies, out to eat simply because the man isn't black? I just shrugged it off and kept on stepping.

Now fast forward to 2009, here is a long list populated by afieldnegro.com that lists the majority of black men who are dating or married to non-black women. I don't see anything wrong with it but it is shocking to see the pattern. I commend afieldnegro.com for putting this list together, and opening up the floor on this subject.

I want to ask you about how you feel about this? Are some of you still adamant about only dating black men? Let's discuss this...
